Samuel Campbell served in the Civil War from July 30, 1861 through August 17, 1863 with Company D, 54th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers.   His gravestone, inscribed as such, is located in the family plot in the church cemetery of the Shelocta United Presbyterian Church.
