What is Wicca?

Although properly pronounced "wee-cha", most people today pronounce it "wick-kah". It is the word from which the term "Witch" evolved.  It meant "to bend", and implied that people could bend reality to their wills.  There is also some evidence showing that it means "wise", indicating that those of Wicca are the "wise ones".

Wicca is an Earth based religion.  Having been recognized as such by the United States Federal government since 1985.  Of course, Witchcraft is much, much older than that.

We are not devil worshippers or Satanists.  These things are of an entirely different order from Wicca.  We do not associate ourselves with these beliefs.  We are God/Goddess loving beings.  The duality of this being the key; for all things in nature are dual.  Most Wiccans are normal, natural everyday people.  They do not eat babies like Hansel and Grettle.  They do not ride broomsticks like Broom Hilda.  They do not chase the wee folk around Oz like the Wicked Witch of the West.  Wicca is a religion of love and happiness.  I know mine and mine know me.

A group of Wiccans who have formed a membership is called a Coven.  These groups gather to practice the Craeft: spell working, rituals or ceremonies,  adoration of the God and Goddess, etc.  We celebrate different holidays than the Christian society. Our holidays are called Sabbats and Esbats.  Since Wicca is an Earth based religion, most of our holidays fall on days of the year that are relative to seasonal changes and markers.

Wiccans use ceremonial tools in their spellworking.  Spells are like prayers.  Not to say that some Wiccans don't pray.  I'm sure there are some who do.  These tools are symbolic of the energies that are worked in the spells or rituals.  With these symbolic tools a much greater awareness is created.  This is needed to mentally reach the spirit world.  Our subconscious is pretty much connected to spirit, where our conscious is not.  The tools used let us connect to the spirit world on a subconscious level, not just a conscious one.  Therefore our spells are effective.

Wiccans follow a rule code called The Rede.  I am not going to post it here.  See some of my links for more info.  They follow a path of goodness and kindness.  For what good you send out comes back ten fold.  And what evil, hate, or badness one sends out will come back at least three fold.  This is not only a Wiccan belief, but a belief of many cultures.  It's called Karma, and not a soul on Earth escapes it.  Oh sure, some don't believe in it.  But the Realm of Spirit is powerful and so it has been set up since the beginning when souls were first embodied.  Karma is learning.  We are all on a spiral journey upwards and shall learn along the way.

Well, fellow Wiccans, Pagans, and Nons that is the lesson for today.  Feel free to e-mail me. Astariel@Wicca.zzn.com
